WHY WE ARE ORGANIC (brief outline)

We have recognized for some years the waste of resources involved in artificial fertiliser production and the consequences of using these products on the soil. These do not enhance the soil fertility and associated organisms fundamental to the soils healthy ecosystem

We recognise the soil is a living environment and in order to enhance it we use e.g. decomposed manures, leafmould or bark mulch. This has the effect of enhancing beneficial soil organisms, bacterium’s and fungi’s. This improves soil drainage and the water holding capacity in the long term and improves the health of plants as well as their resistance to disease and pest attack.

Any plants looking unhappy can be boosted with liquid feeds such as seaweed extracts, liquid comfrey, liquid manures. Customers are encouraged to have water butts in which cut nettles and comfrey can be thrown that breaks down to produce a good foliar feed.

We recognise the consequences of pesticide production and associated effluent produced which affects water sources. Companion planting is encouraged and the use of biological controls e.g. nemesis the bio control for slugs that artificially increases the predatory micro-nematodes in the soil for a short period. Organic pesticides are used as a last resort these largely biodegrade within a relatively short period of time in the environment.
